Emergency Help for a Lost Filling or Crown

Losing a filling or crown exposes the prepared tooth underneath, which can be sensitive, vulnerable to fracture, and at risk of decay or infection. While not always immediately painful, getting it assessed and protected promptly prevents more complex problems down the line.

Protecting the Area Until Your Appointment

If a crown comes off in one piece, clean it gently and try placing it back over the tooth as a temporary measure. Denture adhesive or even a small dab of toothpaste on the inside of the crown can help hold it in place temporarily. Do not use superglue. If a filling has fallen out, you can protect the cavity with temporary filling material available from most pharmacies. Avoid chewing on the affected side. Rinse with warm salt water to keep the area clean. If the tooth is very sensitive, clove oil (eugenol) applied carefully with a cotton bud can provide temporary relief by numbing the exposed dentine.

When a Lost Restoration Becomes Urgent

A lost filling or crown is not always a same-day emergency, but certain situations make it more urgent. Seek prompt assessment if the tooth is painful or highly sensitive, if you can see a dark area or decay inside the tooth, if the tooth has sharp edges cutting your tongue or cheek, if the tooth structure is crumbling or breaking further, or if the tooth previously had root canal treatment (these teeth are more brittle and prone to fracturing without their protective crown). A tooth left exposed for too long can develop new decay, and the space can shift, making it difficult to fit the original restoration later.

Repair and Replacement Assessment

The dentist will assess the tooth underneath the lost restoration and determine why it failed. If the tooth structure is sound, a new filling or crown can often be placed. If decay has developed beneath the old restoration, this needs to be removed first. Sometimes the tooth needs a build-up or post to provide enough structure for a new crown. In cases where the tooth has deteriorated significantly, extraction and replacement may need to be discussed. The emergency visit will stabilise the tooth with a temporary restoration if a permanent one cannot be placed immediately, and plan the definitive treatment for a follow-up appointment.
